Before I jump into my review, I want to thank John Laun and Huel for sending me an amazing care package.
I’ve been using Huel for over a month. I’m particularly interested in finding a good plant-based protein powder that will help supplement our diets without compromising taste or ingredients. I’ve been on the hunt for almost 5 years now and I can tell you it isn’t over.
What is Huel?
Huel’s mission is to make nutritionally complete, convenient, affordable food with minimum impact on the environment and animals. Huel is a nutritionally complete powdered food that contains all the proteins, carbs, and fats you need, plus at least 100% of the European Union’s “Daily Recommended Amounts” of all 26 essential vitamins and minerals. Think of Huel as Human Fuel, meaning that it’s more than a protein powder – it’s food that can replace a meal and cover all of your nutritional needs.
Products I Received
- Vanilla gluten-free powder
- Unsweetened and unflavored powder
- T- Shirt
Nutrition is key in order to have a healthy lifestyle. I know some of you might cringe when I say the word “nutrition,” but I can assure you it is not a boring path, if anything it will make you feel better and more alive than ever. Sounds like a good outcome to me!
Let me talk a little bit about protein powders. (If you haven’t read our article Are we over supplementing ourselves? go for it!) The market is saturated with protein powders and it’s overwhelming to choose one – some are high in sugar while others have very questionable ingredients such as GMO’s, or the whey comes from animals raised in conventional factory farms that are toxic. Do your research, read labels, look up ingredients, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. I can’t tell you which protein powder to get, but I can guarantee that it will take time and you might not marry only one company, and that’s okay because, to be honest, in a world of 7.5 billion people, how can only one company be the best?
What I love about Huel is that they are trying to feed as many people as possible at a very affordable price without leaving the nutritious part out. That is a great mission! Lot’s of people right now are starving even when they are eating. Just look at the school menus in America: pizza, burgers, hot dogs, fries, etc. We are teaching our kids to eat this way because it’s cheap and tasty, but we don’t take into account the long term damages we are creating. Our American culture promotes unhealthy eating from a very young age and that is expanding. We are able to find fast food chains on a more global level and it’s creating a ripple effect that we need to be aware of. Like I said before, nutrition is a key element of a healthy lifestyle. Nobody wants to be sick or see their child deal with unnecessary illnesses.
What I Liked About Huel
- The taste, if you like oatmeal then you will definitely love this
- Plant-based, vegan, and gluten-free option
- Best shaker I’ve tried so far
- The perfect breakfast or late night snack
- Great flour replacement, I made pancakes & bread
- The ingredients label is easy to read
- I don’t have to think about meal planning
What Didn’t Work for Me
- I couldn’t use it as a full meal replacement because I wasn’t able to drink all three scoops. My stomach couldn’t handle it and within hours I would get crazy hungry.
- I’m not a fan of sucralose because there’s too many side effects in my opinion, but I’ll happily take the unsweetened one and add some sweetness to it.
- It’s not organic. I know organic means more expensive, but it also means fewer chemicals.
How much does it cost?
28 meals for $66 if you do a one time purchase. They have discounts when you subscribe or buy in bulk.
Where can you get it?

Breakfast pancakes made with Huel, eggs, baking soda, and pea milk
Overall, it’s a great product. I see myself using it as a breakfast or snack replacement, but not for dinner or lunch. That said, every body is different and has different needs. Some can thrive on a protein shake while others like me might need a little extra and that’s okay – adapt the product to your needs and not the other way around. Huel is a versatile product that will accommodate your needs.
