7 steps to easing back on the health wagon

As a health coach, there are many times that I have to face my undeniable condition: I’m human. Yes, I would love to be able to eat healthy every single day, do all my workouts, and be somewhat similar to all these amazing health peeps who share their health pictures on social media out there. But, I’m not. I have two very active toddlers, I get sick, I love to eat, to enjoy life, and travel. I try to stay as healthy as possible, but sometimes, it takes its toll because I can’t nourish my body properly.

Here is what I do when I fall off the wagon and I want to get back on track:


  • I don’t punish myself. I know that’s easier said than done, but the truth is that I see this as an opportunity rather than a mistake. I have the opportunity to make some changes that will make me feel good, and I’m thankful that I know how to get back on track.
  • I make a plan of what I want to accomplish. This is the exciting part: I get to choose my game plan and I’m in charge of my own health. Sometimes, I create a monthly plan or I keep it simple, taking it one day at a time. Before I know it, a whole week goes by and I’m feeling great. I love to write, so I usually use a notebook to write down my plan, but you can do it on your phone or computer. Use whatever tools you know will work for you.
  •  I start the day with a big glass of water and then I have a green smoothie. Here’s my favorite recipe:

– 2 scoops of your favorite protein powder

– 10 oz of unsweetened almond milk

– 1 tbsp of almond butter

– A handful of fresh, organic spinach

-A dash of turmeric powder

– 2 ice cubes

Blend until smooth, top with bee pollen, and serve. Simple and nutritious.

  •  I practice self-love and gratitude. Throughout the day I choose to be kind to myself and others. I try to slow down my pace and appreciate life. I remind myself that I’m alive and that I can enjoy this beautiful world. This mindset helps me accomplish far more things than if I have my stress mode on.
  • I challenge myself to have an awesome, healthy day. I try to choose foods that I know will make me feel better and I try to practice some kind of physical activity. Depending on how I’m feeling, I will choose a gentle practice like yoga or a more active one like running. No matter what, I always listen to my body and I never force it.
  • I finish the day with a cup of tea to hug my soul. While I drink it, I think that I did well and that my efforts were important. I check in to see how I feel and tell myself that tomorrow is the perfect day to do it all over again.
  • I try to get an early night sleep (ZzZz!).

The truth is that we have our ups and downs, and life is not a straight line to be walked. The importance of taking that into account is part of our health journey. As you know, being healthy is much broader than what we put into our mouths. Yes, nutrition plays an important role and we should always try to choose foods that we know will nourish our bodies. But, adding stress and self-anger on top of our occasional mishaps can be just as unhealthy and habit forming. If you fall off the wagon, don’t waste time beating yourself up. Just get back on track with my easy steps above.
